Metric Measurements

Some of you missed our metric measurements lesson because you had to leave early for the assembly yesterday.

Here is the information you missed. . .

Vocabulary Definitions from the Brain Pop Movie (green sheet):

Traditional- something that stays the same, unchanged
Customary System- the measuring system we use in the United States.  Measures: feet, pounds, miles,  and gallons
Metric System- the measuring system used by the rest of the world.  Measures: meters, liters, grams
Meter- a metric measurement slightly more than 3 feet.
Gram- measures mass. 1 gram is approximately equal to 1 large paperclip.
Unit- metric units increase and decrease by units of 10
Unique- one of a kind, original
Factor (in math)- metric measurements increase and decrease by factors of 10.
Decimal- metric measurements use decimals rather than fractions
Random- no particular order
